Make Content Creation a Top Priority
Categorized in: Content
If you want to achieve your business goals, it’s true that you need to have a strong presence online. One of the best ways to do this is to build up your content marketing because it is a foundational activity. Without good content, this decreases the effectiveness of most other areas of digital marketing, including social media, SEO, and even digital advertising.
The problem is, it can be hard to fall into the routine to make it a priority. Some say that they don’t have enough in-house resources. Others simply don’t prioritize it. Whatever the reason, it is important to work this into your overall strategy. Here is some information that will help you do that:
Create a Content Calendar
When it comes to content creation, you need to know what is going on. Organization is key! Plan out your content several weeks in advance. Determine what the topic and form of the content will be, who will write it, what day it will be published, and more. If you have a large calendar with all the details, you will be more likely to stick with it. That way, if you need to involve others to write the content, post it, approve it, and more then you can have everything in one place. The calendar helps you stay on track.
Keep an Ideas File
Some days your “creative brain” may be more active than others. Inspiration for content topics can really strike at any time so it’s important to keep some kind of journal or notebook of topic ideas. That way, when you sit down to write you can easily reference the notebook if you can’t think of a good topic that day. You should always have content marketing on the brain. If you are in a meeting, on the phone with a client, or working on a project an idea might come to you. Don’t think that you will remember what it was in the future. You probably won’t! Write it down then and there.
Involve Team Members
Marketing content is typically created by the marketing team, but that doesn’t mean that other departments shouldn’t have a say. Speak to employees in other departments about their duties and what they do on an average day. It’s likely that there are some great topics in there that would be of interest to target audience members. The customer service team is always a great resource since they are working directly with customers on a daily basis and hearing what their questions/concerns are. You can get ideas from them, have them weigh in on some of the subjects, and in general get them involved to better strengthen the content.
Make Publishing Easy
Content is only valuable if it’s being published. Many companies require content to be approved by multiple departments, managers, etc. before it ever is seen by target audience members. While it’s a good idea to be thorough like that, it can take a long time. If possible, leave the content approval to one or two trusted team members. You’ll want to develop a system that streamlines the process from start to finish.
As you can see, you need to be organized to treat content marketing like the foundational activity that it is!
