Adding Social Media Platforms Into Your Strategy

When it comes to social media, there are the options that most of us default to because they are so much a part of our culture – both from a business and personal level. However, there are new social media sites that get launched on a regular basis. While it may be tempting to embrace them and start using them, it’s not as simple as that – at least not for business.

Here are some things to keep in mind as you consider whether or not you should incorporate a new social media platform into your digital marketing mix.

Pros and Cons of New Platforms

On some level, it makes sense for businesses to focus on the platforms they know will work well for them. After all, they work well because it’s been proven that their ideal audience is using them. Pair that with the fact that most organizations don’t have unlimited resources to spend on marketing, this could mean that there simply isn’t enough time to try something new.

However, there’s another side to this. If you are an early adopter to a platform, and then it gets really popular, you could come out ahead. You will already have a strong following on the new platform and can benefit from it early before other people start using it.

Evaluate Before You Start Using

Before you start using a new platform, you should evaluate whether or not it is worth your time. You need to assess considerations such as if the new social media platform aligns with your brand, if you see evidence of your ideal audience using the platform, and if your content style will be a good fit for the platform.

Sure, you can gather information online about this before you sign up. However, the best way to assess if your brand is a good fit here is to sign up and spend a few weeks using the platform so that you can get to know it. If you don’t want to do this with your brand, consider signing up under a personal name, just so you can get a feel for the culture before you commit to signing up with a brand. You won’t really know until you start using it.

Start at Your Foundation

When it comes to embracing anything new concerning digital marketing, we take a conservative approach, but we are still able to maintain being on the cutting edge. We are always trying new things! If you have a great social media strategy up and running that is getting some good results for you, this sets the foundation and it also gives you room to grow.

Embracing the new things on the market is good, but it should never be done at the expense of creating your foundation. If your existing social media is working well, there’s no need to change it. Having consistency in your existing social media will give you room to try something new and work something else into the mix.

As with anything, we only adopt something as part of the marketing strategy if it makes sense to the overall goals. If the new social media platform isn’t a good fit for your organization, it isn’t worth considering.
